Aedes albopictus in Africa? First records of live specimens in imported tires in Cape Town.

چکیده
Live larvae of Aedes albopictus have been found entering South Africa in used tire casings imported from Japan on 3 separate occasions. This is the first evidence that this mosquito is entering Africa and underlines the value of mosquito monitoring programs to detect the importations of this important vector. It is suggested that undetected populations of Ae. albopictus may have already become established in Africa.

Aedes albopictus and other mosquitoes imported in tires into Durban, South Africa.
The results of surveillance for immature stages of mosquitoes in samples of wet tires in 5 consignments imported into Durban from Japan is reported. Three of these consignments contained tires with immatures of Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus and Uranotaenia n. novobscura. The proportions of all the wet tires calculated to contain mosquitoes were 189/1,488 (13%), 20/813 (2.5%) and 13/1,032 (1.3%)...
متن کاملA survey of mosquitoes breeding in used tires in Spain for the detection of imported potential vector species.
The used tire trade has facilitated the introduction, spread, and establishment of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, and other mosquito species in several countries of America, Africa, Oceania, and Europe. A strategy for detecting these imported mosquito vectors was developed in Spain during 2003-2004 by EVITAR (multidisciplinary network for the study of viruses transmitted by arthrop...
متن کاملShort communication: first record of Aedes albopictus in Gabon, Central Africa.
The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus is an important arbovirus vector. Originating in East Asia, the species has been introduced to the Americas, the Indo-Pacific and Australasian regions as well as Europe and Africa, mostly during the past 30 years and probably by transportation in used tires. We report Ae. albopictus for the first time from Gabon (Libreville). In addition, the yellow fev...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the monthly frequency of larvae and pupae of Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti and other mosquitoe species in tires, and the influence of environmental factors on that. METHODS The immature stages of mosquitoes were collected monthly from four tires in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, Brazil, from November 1997 to October 1998. متن کاملJapanese Aedes albopictus among four mosquito species reaching New Zealand in used tires.
Since a 1988-89 survey of northern New Zealand revealed no additions to the known mosquito fauna, this country's used tire importations have much increased. Relevant entomological quarantine was thus monitored in a November 1992-January 1993 Auckland project, during which almost 1/3 of 8,549 casings from Japan proved wet on inspection. In this study and at 2 South Island ports afterwards, 5 ves...
